  1. Hades, the greek god of the Underworld, came from Mt Olympis. He is the son of a titan named Cronus, who, at birth ate all of his children to prevent them from fullfilling a prophecy that said one of his children would replace him on the throne. However, Cronus' wife Rhea, another Titan, hid one of Hades brothers, zeus. Later, zeus got his two brothers, Hades and poseidon, and his three sisters, Hera, Hestia, and Demeter, out of Cronus by killing him. Now that their father was dead, the three brothers needed to divide the land up evenly. They drew lots to decide which regions each brother would rule. Zeus got the sky and the living, Poseidon got the sea, and Hades got the Underworld and the dead.

While ruling the Undeworld, Hades abducted the daughter of the goddess Ceres, Persephone (per-sef-uh-nee),and took her into the Underworld with him. Ceres was devestated, and went cried for 6 months. During tose 6 months, all the crops died and it became very cold. Hades married Persephone, but agreed to let her go to the regular world for half the year. During that half of the year, Ceres was happy and all the crops grew and it was warm. But, when Persephone had to return to the Underworld, Ceres ws sad again and the crops died.
