At the Academy of Music in Philadelphia on February 5, 1870.  It was a demonstration of Henry Heyl's Phasmatrope, which was really a series of posed photographs that gave the illusion of movement, but is credited by some as the first motion picture.  Read more details on the site below under Heyl.

  3. The first machine patented in the United States that showed animated pictures or movies was a device called the "wheel of life" or "zoopraxiscope". Patented in 1867 by William Lincoln, moving drawings or photographs were watched through a slit in the zoopraxiscope.
