  1. 16 million

  2. newmarketsalsa has the correct answer about The Green Monkey and Seattle Dancer, he always posts pretty insightful stuff... bidders got dizzy and drove the price of both horses thru the roof, but the price of Seattle Dancer (seattle dancer ran 5 races with 2 wins a second and 1 third , earnings of 150K and sired a number of grade/group 1 winners) a son of Nijinsky was very high (13.1M in 1985) given the price horses were fetching at that time, only 20 years later would an unraced horse fetch more, the son of Forestry (whos sire was Storm Bird , a world renowned son of Northern Dancer like Nijinsky) inspired a bidding war like none had seen for years, stopping the gavel at 16 million dollars for the 2 year old...as for the most ever fetched for a horse, I believe that Cigar went into syndication for the then highest price...but those who had initially invested were disappointed to find he was shooting blanks...currently the horse Deep Impact who very successfully ran overseas was syndicated for 42.7M...

  3. Most expensive yearling:

      1985 Keeneland July Sale-$13.1 million

Seattle Dancer by Nijinsky II out of My Charmer (Poker) [Dam of Seattle Slew]

      Race Record - 5 starts (2 wins, 1 place, 1 show)  Earned $152,413.00

Seattle Dancer entered stud at Ashford Stud and tlater at Coolmore Stud.  He was moved to Japan for the 1998 breeding season.  In 2003, he was moved to Gestut Auenquelle in Roedinghausen, Germany for stud service.  He died in Germany on June 12, 2007 from a heart attack.  Seattle Dancer produced 37 stakes winners.

Most Expensive 2 year old in training:

2006 Fasig-Tipton Calder 2 y/o Sale-$16 million The Green Monkey by Forestry out of Magical Masquerade (Unbridled)

    Unraced to date

In September 2002, War Emblem was sold to the prominent Yoshida racing family of Japan for US$17.7 million to stand at stud at their renowned Shadai Stallion Station in Shiraoi, Hokkaido.  So far, War Emblem has been a large dissapointment in the breeding shed, producing only 43 foals.  This year, 2007, he did not cover any mares.  His foals have, collectively earned less than $500,000.00.

In 2000, Fusaichi Pegasus was sold to Coolmore for $70 million.

Most of the highest priced sales are private, making it very difficult to know the purchase price.

  4. Seattle dancer......never made it to the track.......

  5. It depends on who you mean!  Do you mena the most expensive horse sold at public auction or the most expensive horse sold full stop?  This would be difficult to find out as the "private" sales are just that - private.

For example, recently Shekh Mohammed bought Authorised, the 2007 Epsom Derby winner, for a reported £20million (that's about $40 million).  I certainly don't know of any horses sold at auction more fore than that!  However, I am sure that there have been more expensive private sales over the years.

The most expensive horse sold at auction would be one of the following:

The most expensive two year old sold would be The Green Monkey.  He was sold at Fasig-Tipton's Calder two year old sale to Demi O'Byrne (Coolmore's buyer) for $16million back in 2006.  He has yet to reach the racetrack.  This is his pedigree:

The most expensive yearling would be Seattle Dancer.  He was sold to the BBA at Keeneland July Yearling sale in 1985.  He made $13.1million.  He DID make it to the racetrack, but only ran as a 3 year old.

    This is his pedigree:

Personally I'd say that Seattle Dancer was the more expensive, as if you apply inflation to the 1985 price to bring it into line with the 2006 price, I think you'll find it was more.

  6. I would say The Green Monkey at the Fasig - Tipton Calder Sale in Florida. $16 million and the horse turned out to be a total dud.
