  1. Washington, DC. Around 1984/5. It was an underground subculture that later became mainstream in the second wave between 1994 and 2000. This current third wave of emo that I assume you are reffering to started just after the second wave in 2000 but has evolved over the last 8 years in such a way that most people seem to think it is a new subculture. But, like all subcultures, it didn't suddenly spring up over night, they evolve.

Edit: It's geographical roots are in America, but at least half of the musical and fashionable influences came from the UK from British metal and punk. Even more British influence was involved in teh second wave and the current third wave has caused a slight split, there seems to be an American type of 'emo' and a British type of 'emo'.

'Emo' was used to describe the emotional lyrics of many underground hardcore punk bands in Washington, DC.

  2. I think CA there was a huge underground punk movement there in the 80's and 90's. But with the introduction of music by such as Green Day, which wasn't heavy enough to be classed as punk or all out rock n roll but instead had quite alot of emotion.

  3. i'm not sure, but i know the term has been around for at least 7 or 8 years but maybe longer, i knew "emo" people in college and always associated the cure and emo.  now its all "whiny white boy" with perfectly placed hair c**p...

  5. in a dark little corner somewhere

  6. It got big here in Oz just after I finished high school (thank god)

Could never understand why middle-class teenagers were so depressed.  It must be hard having nothing important to complain about.  And what's with the "you don't understand me" thing?  Cos noone has ever been a teenager before-right?  Sorry, soapbox.

  7. random guess CA or NY

...know you dont see it much in NC

  8. emo is really a kind of music but was banned during middle 90's because it is the kind of music that's very depressing!so if depressed people hear it they become more down and can't think of anything that might cheer them up!And the result is some go crazy or others commit suicide. So it is banned but others that are to smart to do anything stupid such as ending their own life.love this kind of music so the gov.just made it an underground music.

    It cAME FROM u.s.a!
