  1. Until very recently, the #1 team in the country hosted the NCAA National Volleyball Championship.  And that was the case in the first 5 years the games were officially played (1970 - 1974).  In 1970 - 1973 the top 4 teams played a round robin format.  Then it switched to one and done format in 1974.

In 1970 it was hosted by UCLA.  UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State and Ball State joined the host team where UCLA defeated Long Beach State in the championship.

In 1971 it was hosted by UCLA.  Springfield, UC Santa Barbara and Ball State joined the host team where UCLA defeated UC Santa Barbara in the championship.

In 1972 it was hosted by Ball State.  San Diego State, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara joined the host team where UCLA defeated San Diego State in the championship.

In 1973 it was hosted by San Diego State.  Long Beach State, Ball State and Army joined the host team where San Diego State defeated Long Beach State in the championship.

In 1974 it was hosted by UC Santa Barbara.  In the semifinals UCLA defeated Springfield and UC Santa Barbara defeated Ball State.  UCLA went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara in the championship.
