  1. The head of any drum is the thin membrane that is struck to create the sound.  Originally these were also called "skins" since that's what they were made of (usually rawhide or some other uncured animal skin--goatskin is common in African drums, and some Arab instruments use fish skin).  Nowadays, most bass drums will have heads of synthetic materials.
