Where/which is the Italian consulate for people that live in Valparaiso, IN?

I'm an Italian citizen and I live in Indiana (1and 1/2 hour from Chicago); I need a new passport and when, I was finnally able to rich (via phone) the Italian consulate in Chicago, the lady told me "Let's not waist time here...you're calling the wrong place! If you live in IN you got to call the consulate in that State, so Detroit!".....????? What?!?! Is that right? Can somebody help me? Thanks :)
