Question:

Where will Mats Sundin play next year?

Vancouver offered Sundin a two year deal worth $20 million, and he turned it down because Vancouver probably won’t win a Stanley Cup in the next two years. Mats Sundin wants one thing more than money, and that’s to hoist the Stanley Cup over his head. I bet he ends up on one of these five teams next year: Montreal, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Dallas, or Detroit.

  1. I'm not sure what Mat's wants. Seems to me if he really wanted a cup he would have accepted a trade to a contender at last years deadline.

    As to the teams listed

Mtl- 7.5 million of cap space still need to sign RFA O'byrne

Pitts 2.6M of cap space still need a couple of bodies to fill roster

SanJose 1.3M of cap space. still need to sign a couple of players

Dallas 3.6M space still short a couple of bodies

Det 4M space but need to sign Flippula.

Based on the above it seems that of those 5 teams only Montreal has the space to offer a decent contract without moving bodies.

Vancouver still has 10M plus in cap space but it seems he would have accepted that offer already if he wanted to play in Vancouver.

I still think he will retire, barring that I think he will sign in Toronto or Montreal.

  2. From October through March, who cares.  From April through October, some golf course somewhere.

  3. I agree with cdb24fan's first statement!!

  4. As cdn24fan noted...I'm not sure Sundin knows.  So then he'll sign with Vancouver.  Or not.  But maybe.  Or not.  Maybe somewhere else.  Or not.  Maybe Chicago.  Or not.

My guess is that he won't be back in Toronto, so beyond that, it's off my radar.

    Wake me when it's over...

  5. Word is that the Rangers are picking up some momentum in the race for Mats but I dont beleive it....they would have to trim so much cap space, and I think even the Rangers are catching on that buying championship with big names isnt working....

I would guess either Montreal or staying with the Leafs....Detroit if he really wants a legit shot at winning...

  6. Lets try the Colorado Avalanche.

Plenty of cap space if Joe doesnt come back.  Plus Avs could use some help after this offseason.  If Joe says no to a comeback i wouldnt be surprised if the Avs didnt throw and offer his way....he did start his career with Quebec.

  7. Vancouver is desperately hoping he signs there.  Otherwise their big off season acquisition was Pavol Demitra!

  8. IN order: 1. Detroit

                   2. Montreal

                   3. San Jose

                   4. Dallas

                   5. Pittsburgh

  9. Now that the Canucks have Demitra there is a better chance he will end up in Vancouver.

  10. Detroit has 4 million left under the cap, and already has two full lines of superstar talent on offense.  Detroit is the last team that would need/want Sundin at this point.  It was a possibility before we acquired Marian Hossa but not anymore.  Dallas already locked up their top 4 forwards for a number of years.  Mats Sundin wouldn't go to San Jose.  He would most likely go to a Canadian team.  How many times is this question going to be asked?  The guy hasn't made a difference in the league since his inception as a Leaf 40 years ago.  Who cares where he goes?  Why don't you search past questions because "Mats Sundin" should bring up about 300 hits.

EDIT - Valterri Filppula has been elected for salary arbitration so that he can resign with the Wings sometime before his hearing.  That leaves, in my best estimate, about 2 million left for Detroit to hypothetically sign Sundin.  I don't think Sundin needs the Cup that bad.

  11. Dallas, san jose, and maybe pitt dont have the cap room, detroit doesnt need him, so i think that he is going to the habs
