  1. Hi Amanda,

    The female cones (what we normally think of as a "pine cone") tend to be located higher on the pine tree, while the male cones tend to be located lower on the tree. As the female cones are wind pollinated, this is an adaptation to encourage cross-pollination (rather than self-pollination where the male cones of a tree pollinate the female cones of the same tree).

    The male cones are small (about 1" long, red-colored, cone-shaped clusters) and usually overlooked or not understood by most people. Many people mistake them for "baby" female cones.

  2. I can only presume you where wanting this information for the purposes of learning about seed collection and growing,the term female pine cones is not relevant as far as i am aware..
