I'm a Canadian student going on exchange to Japan for a year, and I'm required to take property insurance against fire or water damage covering at least $15,000 USD (Â¥1,500,000), tenant liability coverage (fire) for $100,000 USD (Â¥10,000,000) and personal liability insurance for $1,000,000 USD (Â¥100,000,000) and since I'm already stretching my budget far enough to go on this exchange, I'm looking for good, low rates that would satisfy the requirements.

  1. Sounds like a great experience!

I think this is best purchased in Japan.  You could easily get an umbrella policy here for the personal liability but I would think that you can get it all in a tenants package policy in Japan.  I am not licensed outside of Ontario so I can't be sure...

Have you checked into travel medical insurance?  Our provincial plans do not cover out of country properly and most group plans have a 30-60 day limit.

    Hope your trip is great!

  2. You need to talk to the school you're going to, to cover this.  Odds are, it will cost you about $100 USD a year, from a Japanese company.
