  1. Futon. It's like a big blanket but it's really a mattress. Those futon beds in the West are not what Japanese sleep on so avoid it. You can fold up the futon and put it away in your closet. If you're not comfortable with sleeping on the floor, you might want to reconsider this idea. It's fairly thick so it's comfortable but I'm just warning you ahead of time. (Plus most Japanese sleep in a bed these days unless they have no room for it.)

Since the futon is a mattress, treat it like such. Don't sleep directly on it. You can't wash a mattress. Cover it with a sheet cover made for it and then use your sheet and blanket as well. You can wash the sheet cover for the futon. The futon needs to get aired out and smacked around a bit every now and then. (not kidding, you've probably seen them do this in your shows, you hang it on a wall/fence outside and beat it with something that looks like a fly swatter)

To learn the proper name for each component of a Japanese traditional futon bed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futon

To find it to purchase, you're gonna have to go to a Japanese store or search around for a place that can ship it to you. If you have Japanese in your community, go to where they shop. They might have it. It's going to be easiest to find in California and Hawaii at shops like Marukai (marukai.com) that include the Waraku store (Japanese furniture/clothes).

  2. You mean a futon? Those are great because they can easily be put down into a full size bed and then put back up into a couch. They even have covers on them that look like regular furniture and are comfy. My husband has one in his office and he loves it.
