Where would I find tournaments open to the public?

Question

Seems like every tournament has a requirement that you have to be a member of a golf group. I'm building my skills and it would be fun to play in a competition, even if I get embarrassed with a terrible score.

Is there a free search engine with tournament listings?

go to the usga website it will tell you how to establish a handicap even though you play at public courses. they will also have a schedule of tournaments for non professional players

For the most part they want you to be part of a golf group to get you an index or handicap.  I know for CA you have to belong to a golf group to carry a handicap.  I'm sure there are hokie-dok tournaments out there, but its not the same without carrying a handicap.
