Like most people, I have remote keyless entry, so I can't just use a magnetic case and store just a car key underneath the car, or anything like that.

  1. The valet key idea mentioned above is a good solution if you have one.    I used to go on canoe trips and other wilderness trips quite often.   I usually put my wallet and keys in a ziplock freezer bag and dedicate a pocket of a day pack to them, which I won't open until the trip is over.   The day pack can then be secured to a thwart in the canoe by using one of the straps or by adding you own lanyard with a clip on it.   You could use a small roll up water bag or thwart pack as well.

  2. Leave the keyless remote at home and take the valet (service) key with you.  You'll just have to rough it and open the door by turning the lock.  Carry the key in a key case that ties in your shoe laces.  Works for me.
