  1. I would say that any inner-city experience would probably be challenging in its own way. You have the challenge of working with struggling students, and you have personal challenge of learning about and adapting to a new place. If I were in your shoes, I would look for a city that interested me first, then begin my school search from there.

If you were looking for a specific location, I know that Camden, NJ is facing some very serious problems. Until recently, it was the most dangerous city in the United States - now it's down to #4 or 5. On top of that, there were reports of unbelievable corruption in the school systems, and they are still begging for people to teach there in hopes of changing something.

New Jersey is an adventure in itself, so maybe you should look into it. :-)

  2. Everyplace is challenging- the challenges are just different from one place to another.  (I taught in several states, city, rural, public, private, ...)

The way you have it worded almost sounds like you want a difficult teaching situation.  Why don't you think about what kind of environment you would enjoy the most? Think about the type of school, student, climate, size of the town, ...   If you are just looking for a change, I know Las Vegas and Hawaii are often advertising for teachers.

  3. if u want challenging, try Sunapee Central Elementry, small school, tough kidos.... its in New Hampshire

  4. A friend of mine taught in Compton - a suburb of Los Angeles - and found it quite challenging.  Is that what you're looking for, though?  You could live at the beach and teach in the inner-city, so it could be an interesting change for you.
