For a reasonable price. I think it would be better to go to an unknown area, pay a reasonable price, and enjoy local things rather than pay to stay in a touristy area.

Obviously, the low-cost Italian home for rent would need to be in a place where the locals won't mind a U.S. citizen/family staying for a week.

  1. Have you ever considered staying on a boat in Sardinia. The locals are very welcoming to Americans, the East coast is relatively unknown and very reasonable.

On one of my first trips to Sardinia with some friends and their two children I spent ages looking for a home  to rent when a friend of mine then suggested that I hire a yacht.

I expected it to be very expensive but it really isn't that expensive. Anyway I hired a yacht and the result was a magnificent holiday. You can read my suggestions here http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-...

If you are would like a home though these are some of m y favourite places and nearly  all with access to boating. The first one on the page is my favourite - a really wonderful place.

  2. Sicily, Sardinia or someplace in Puglia

  3. The south of Italy is generally cheaper, and you can find great places for boating.

I would suggest you go to Sicily as it is astonishingly beautiful and not too expensive.

People will not mind having US citizens around, but take into account that few people will speak english.

Finally, you could easily end up paying more than local would, especially for boats and skippers, if you need them, so be careful and try to visit different places before spending your money.
