I am thinking about taking a road trip for my birthday. Someone suggested Mexico. I live in Texas and was wondering where a good place to drive to for the weekend might be. I've heard that some of the border towns are pretty dangerous. Any suggestions of a safe place for some of my friends and I to have some fairly inexpensive fun?

  1. Unfortunately for you the really good things to see in Mexico are really far from the border (plus Texas is a very big state to cross). The border cities are the worst places I have been to in my life (particularly Reynosa). The recommendable cities to visit start to appear after a 900 km. ride from the border.

Try to take more time for your trip or consider one of the many low budget airlines and you could plan a very interesting trip.

  2. Well, my answer is YES, you can go to the coast of Tamaulipas, you have to be as careful as in any other place, you know, don't go uot alone at night, don't carry a lot of money/jewlery, etc. but the beach in Tamaulipas is beautiful, close to Matamoros. Enjoy!

  3. I am an American living in Mexico, and i love Mexico, but my answer to you is NO.  The areas you could reach on a weekend trip from Texas are NOT safe.  You would have to get a car permit and car ins. too...more expenses.  Anyway, wait to travel to Mexico until you can come down to the beautiful cities in central Mexico...border areas are ugly and unsafe.  tjere are some great places in Texas you can choose from.
