  1. Working on the basis of using the capital/major cities of each country as a reference (as it is difficult to get recent & directly comparable data), then based on info of March 2008, the cost of living (most expensive first) is as follows:

    12 Paris (France)

    25 Amsterdam (Netherlands)

    28 Madrid (Spain)

    31 Barcelona (Spain)

    37 Munich (Germany)

    38 Berlin (Germany)

    40 Frankfurt (Germany)

    46 Dusseldorf (Germany)

    50 Hamburg (Germany)

    57 Lyon (France)

Obviously this is just taken from the data of the selected cities.  In any country there are more/less expensive areas.  However equally, more expensive areas tend also to be where more jobs are available e.g. here in the Netherlands you can buy a house cheaply in the East of the country, but if you do not speak Dutch it would be virtually impossible to find a job (and difficult depending on your profession even if you do).  Whereas around Amsterdam where there are more International companies, this directly pushes up the costs of living (demand vs supply)

Anyway, this helps to give a rough guideline and the source data is as good as any comparison I have see as late
