Im looking at buying a house, but there was an addition (the work looks a little shoddy) so how do i find out if the person who built it got permits for it? What dept in the city would keep track of that stuff?

  1. Perhaps the building inspectors office.  Go to City Hall and just ask there.

  2. Check with the city building inspection department if you have concerns.  In most areas, an inspector will come out at request to verify that any additions have been approved and meet code requirements.

  3. Building & Permits department
