Question:

Where would one find the widest variety of LOCALLY grown natural produce?

By "natural", I mean not genetically altered. I wonder if it would be as simple as defining a latitude range, then again, the right altitude at a certain latitude could change things, so maybe it's best to define other things, like...

Temperature range...

Amount of rainfall...

Amount of daylight...

Humidity...

Would it snow at all?

What else?

Then again, perhaps someone just knows a certain city, state, or region where the widest variety of LOCALLY grown natural produce is found.

  1. I think you are asking what country?

    CHINA..

because of so much range of what they EAT.. NOT what they can grow

like since they eat bugs, and other critters we would not consider food their markets have the MOST variety

ALSO because shipping in some areas is only by bicycle....

but really its because of what they eat..

interesting note: most scientists agree - if we dont start reducing our own population numbers - in 50 years we too will be eating cat, dog, and bugs... no place to raise cattle. all cattle ranges will be housing or for growing food for the people.. beef will be expensive..

I had tubes tied after 1 kid to avoid this inevidability

  2. You have to be much more specific.  Different vegetation requires different conditions.  In general, you should factor in bugs.

  3. Southern China comes to mind.

This is year around production, supported with irrigation and lots of rain. It gets about 12 hours of daylight most of the year, and is moderately humid.

The local market absorbs most of locally grown food in some areas, but it also exports to China's large cities too. One condition needed to keep local produce available is that the local market does not decide to buy elsewhere when someone far away bids a couple cents lower price.

  4. check local grocers and farmers markets

  5. I think the Delmarva area on the east coast has the best conditions from growing the greatest variety of produce, perhaps in the world. Most of that produce is grown for the wholesale market and not the direct markets so not too many CSA's etc in that area. Michigan has a vibrant fresh produce ag community as does Ohio and Indiana. Than there are the huge growing areas in central California and around Yuma AZ.

http://www.localharvest.org has the biggest national listing of farms that grow "natural" and organic farm products. check them out and see what you can find.
