I am a U.K. citizen and have lived in the U.S. for 4 years. Way of live here is too hard with very little vacation time and the high cost of medical insurance and medical bills. Numerous people I have met here frm the U.K. cannot wait to move back after they see how live is here. Where would be better place to live Canada or just move back to the U.K.. Canada has free health care and where can visit my wifes mother who lives in N.Y. but U.K. you get great vacation time and money is worth a ton more. We have lived in TX, AZ and NY the economy is bad everywhere right now and in TX and AZ I am considered an outsider because I have an accent, Most jobs want to hire American and do not recognize qualifications or my experiance as worthy.

  1. Correction: Canada's health care isn't "free"....I think too many people have this misconception that the government has this system where he just loans "free" medical handouts.

Your taxes is what funds Canada's health care system. Every paycheck you receive, a portion of it goes towards the health system. As well as other things. This is why Canada's tax bracket is extremely high. It's to cover the cost of health among other things. The only time its free is when you're not working. But the moment you move down to Canada and find employment, a portion of your paycheck goes towards health.

Otherwise, you should stay in the UK. You have more more vacation time and plenty of other benefits Canada does not offer. Canada only gives 10 days vacation time, and the other days are holidays and lieu days.

If you're a person who likes to relax and not work too hard, stay in the UK

  2. I'm an American and I agree, the vacation system in the US is abysmal. I have a foreign born spouse and when she first heard "2 weeks vacation" she was shocked.

  3. On behalf of the US, I'm sorry to hear you're having these problems.  Yes, health care in the US is pretty badly broken and the economy is on the way down. Most analysts believe that the economic problems will be, or already are, world-wide.

Where to live?  London!  Remember, Samuel Johnson said when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life!

  4. I love America. But, if you hate it, I think you should go back to the UK. You probably won't be happy anywhere else if you can't find even one place in this vast country that you are content with.

If you tried living in a big city, then I understand. But America has so much more to offer. Yes, it still does!

  5. The taxes may scare you in Canada.  Everything is taxed, even the postage stamps and funerals.  The economy is not all that good in Canada right now either mostly because of the fuel prices, which is in the U.S. as well.  Your accent would probably meld in with the rest of Canada.  If you have the education, your accent will not be a problem.  If you moved to the east coast of Canada or Que or Ontario, ..New York is not that far away to visit your MIL...Since you are on this side of the Atlantic right now, why not put out some feelers for jobs etc...and see what you think...

  6. I am an American now living in Canada.  The lifestyle here is not too different from living in the States.  Yes, sure the health care is better in Canada but the cost of living is much higher here too.  Gas, mortage, groceries and all the other necessities are expensive in comparision.  Minimum wage is higher in Canada too so it all works out but it does take some getting used to.

I would suggest giving Canada a try.  The population is relatively low here and the Canadians are forward thinking in the environment and green policies.  There are lots of jobs in Alberta and Saskatchewan and their economies are booming.  Not as good in Eastern Canada.

Living here is more like the UK than the US is.  Immigration visas are a lenghty process for entering Canada so get started if you are truly interested.  www.cic.gc.ca

  7. As a Texan, I am sorry you feel that way in Texas. That is not how true Texans react to people so they themself must be outsiders. And as an American I am sorry you had a hard time here as well. :(

But it is true we don't get enough vacation time and money isn't worth much right now.

Honestly, I would move to where it makes you the most happy.
