  11. If it ever existed then I would imagine that it would have been in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean, as according to Plato, it was beyond the Pillars of Hercules (presumably west of the Strait of Gibraltar).

    However, I am a supporter of the theory that Plato used the myth of Atlantis as a way to discourse his political theories (for example, the tale that Atlantis sank in one day/night after attacking Greece can be viewed as a way of extolling the sacredness of the Greek mainland). While there are many theories that postulate Atlantis having existed and subsequently sunk by a volcanic eruption, I honestly think that Plato was just using the story as a parable of Greek superiority.
