Question:

Where would you use FAIRWAY WOODS nowadays?

Specially when you are consistent with your driver and Par 3's are reachable with the 3 hybrid.

Maybe for the 2nd shot on a Par 5. But still then whats the point of sacrificing accuracy for extra distance when youre not going to be reach the green on a Par 5 in 2 anyway.

Fairway Woods... Are there still any use for them?

When do YOU use your fairway woods?

  1. Lots of people CAN reach par 5's in two, so there is still use for them on Par 5's.  I use mine mostly on tight par 4's or on holes where hitting a driver will put me in danger of reaching trouble (bunkers, lakes, OB, deep rough, etc.)  Also, consider that hybrids produce a different ball flight and trajectory than fairway woods.  Their ball flight resembles a long-iron type of trajectory, which is great for long par threes or tight approaches to par 4's and par 5's, but when you are trying to hit a shot that needs to roll out after it lands, a hybrid wont do that for you, a fairway wood will.

  2. Depends on the situation.  I use 3 Wd on some par 5's   I use a seven wood if the conditions are right.  and I use my hybrid when the situation calls for it.    different tools.....different jobs.

  3. I think it depends on how you hit them.  If you are hitting the 3w and your 16 deg or 19 deg hybrid the same, then save the club and take some thing else.  But, if your a long hitter, you may be hitting the 3w a lot farther than you could hit a Hybrid and also may like it off the tee for some shots that you don't want to carry far.

Personally, I have a 2,3 and 4 Hybrid (19, 21 and 25 deg.)  I dont have a 5w or 3 or 4 iron anymore.  I have a drive and 3W, and am looking to replace my 3W as it is not very good.  I am actually depating a 16 deg hybrid or the 15 degree 3W.  Not sure which to go with myself.

  4. I use my 3 wood off the tee on the first hole (I am more accurate with my 3 than driver so this is to get past the 1st hole jitters) and off the tee on par 5 dog legs where my driver would be too much and a 3 Hy wouldn't be enough to get to the bend.

I use my 5 wood on said par 5 second shots as I *can* reach the green in 2 (or be darn close, like putting from the fringe) on most of the courses I play.

  5. On the fairway maybe???  Just kidding, I like to use a fairway wood on tight par four tee shots or lay up shots off the tee.

  6. I don't. I use a 19 degree hybrid and a 21 degree hybrid. Much easier to hit and the same or better distance than most fairway woods.

  7. I use a 3 wood off the tee when a driver might go through the fairway on a dogleg, or when the fairway gets narrower the further you hit it.  Use it to get as close to a par 5 in two as I can, or maybe even reach a par five in two.  Use it to make up ground if you miss a drive, anytime the shots calls for me to hit it between 220 and 235 which is about how far I hit my 3 wood.  I also carry a five wood which I hit about 200 to 215 and very high so it lands soft.  I do not carry any hybrids though as I still love to hit long irons.

  8. If you aren't reaching par 5's in two, I totally think it makes sense to carry a 3wood and make sure you are replacing your 2,3 and 4 irons with hybrids, not many players should be carrying anything higher than a 4 iron.

  9. I use fairway woods in the fairways, shots to long par 3s, to greens on the second shots to fairly long par 4s and sometimes  3rd shots to par 5s. Even though one cannot reach the par 5s in 2, the closer one gets with the second shot the easier iron shot he leaves himself. It is a lot easier hitting the 7,8,9,PW than hitting the shorter woods or 3,4,5,and 6 irons. If you are not a believer, chart your shots for a season and tell what you find are easier.

  10. I carry a 1W, 3W and 3IW (hybrid). I strike the ball very well and often use the 3W for my 2nd shots into par 5s. Of course, like you say, you'll never hit all of them in 2, but you have no chance if you don't have it in the bag. Often times, i use the 3W off the tee more than from the fairway in the round. It allows me to hit it long but soft and allows for a little more control off the tee than the driver. I hit my 3W about 240.

  11. Of course they're is a use for fairway woods.  I hit my driver 285, the 3 wood 250, and my 2 iron 230.  That would be a huge gap in my bag if I didnt have the 3w.  I also use the 3 wood as a driving club if I want to play more conservatively from the tee.
