Hi.

My husband and I live in the southeast US and will be hosting a high schooler from Brazil next year.

We always vacation for the week over Christmas and will take her with us next year. But we can't decide where to go.

She enjoys everything and has no dislikes. We want it to be nice and fun for her to have a family vacation.

So, high school kids, help me out please! Where would you want to go?

Thanks:)

  1. I'm fourteen, and I enjoy everything too, not to mention I will be a foreign exchange student next year!  Here are some suggestions: California (Disney Land), Hawaii, Idaho (Silverwood Theme Park), Las Vegas, New York.  We also have lots of things to do here in Washington state!  Beaches, camping, you name it!  I'm sure anything that you decide will be fine as long as your guest feels comfortable.

      Good luck!

  2. Disney Land

    or Disney World..

    because i've never been there..

    I'm 14..

  3. My two favorite places to visit are Washington (state) and North Carolina.

In Washington, the mountains are great, and they have the beach as well.. even though it water is freezing.

NC there is soo much to do. beach, surfing, snorkling, jet skiis, fishing, the most beautiful sunset. I stay at Wrightsville Beach, but if you go further from the coast, Asheville is gorgerous.

    I hope i helped (:

  4. I would love to go to the beach. Maybe Florida and then disney word?  Or some big city in California... like LA?   then you get to go to the beach and have tons of fun.

  5. I've hosted 13 exchange students, and am looking forward to number 14 in the fall. One thing I've found out -- they are unpredictable!  For example ... the kid we have this year asked to go to Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands. Go figure!

Also, when taking your trip, remember that your exchange organization probably offers trips to different places. Those are usually the East Coast, California and Hawaii. If your student plans to take one of those, you probably wouldn't want to take the same trip!

One thing we've discovered that most Brazilians have not seen snow! Depending on where you live in the southeast, you may not have much there either. So, a winter ski trip might be something worth considering.

However, I'd wait until your student has been with you a while, and feels comfortable enough to express an opinion. She may feel like she has to agree with what you want to do to be polite and not want to express an opinion. What I've done in the past, once I've gotten to know my kids a bit, is put together three or four very different ideas -- usually they'll go for one (but not this year! LOL).

So, I'd suggest looking at the great ideas these kids have given you, flesh them out somewhat and present all three. Make sure she knows about the other trips her exchange organization might offer as well.

Good luck and have a great year!

P.S. If you have not hosted before, I'd like to let you know it's perfectly acceptable for you to ask her to pay for big ticket vacation items like ski lift tickets, plane tickets, etc.
