Check ebay and do a search by your zip code. You'll get high quality stuff for lower cost ... and by buying locally, you get to play before you buy!

I've bought 3 guitars this way and couldn't be happier!

Pawn Shops, Music Stores, sometimes at WalMart or other stores of this type.

Pawn Shops will have high quality just out of pawn. These are usually very cared for and very nice instruments, for half the cost of new. You can also get Amps and other necessities there as well. Check with the owner or manager if you can try them out. They usually like for musician to sit in the shop and play as it brings in more customers.

Music Stores always have practice area for musicians to use. They couldn't sell many instruments if the people couldn't try them out to get the "feel" of them.

WalMart has very inexpensive instruments. but you have to watch the quality closely.
