Wheres better to live?

Question

hertfordshire, surrey, middlesex? if you want to have quick commutable distance to london.

we really want to move out of essex but it seems impossible as we dont know where to move, there's so many places around london it seems impossible for us to decide on a place or to visit each place, i look on the internet but you really need to visit places.

we dont have kids and rent, we're just looking for somewhere nice, affordable, good shops/facilties, nice countryside, close to london.

please can anyone advise?

is there a book/guide we can buy of places to live in the uk?

You really need to visit these places yourself to get a feel for them.  You can't just buy a house near a train station and hope for the best.  You say you don't have kids but you might in the future so take that into consideration.  It depends where you work and how much commuting you're willing to do.  Hertfordshire is quite far away wheras if you're in the London end of Surrey it won't be much at all.  No one can advise you on where to live, you're just going to have to take a weekend field trip and check the places out for yourself.  Sorry I couldnt' help but you can't tell someone where to live.

I think there are nice parts of all, really. What about Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, a nice area which is close to London.

Well it really depends on where you want to commute in London. If you commute to City Kent or Essex is better,

If you are commuting to north or nortwest part of london Go for Hertfordshire or Middlesex, and for south london or west end, go for Surrey.

If you are looking for affordable and nice place, for me Hertfordshire does take the maximum points followed by Surrey, and Middlesex.

Again it is just a personal preferences. It would be easier if you put on some specific parameters in your question. But for me Herts is the best place to live.
