  1. the best deal is to go to Ceberete or Sousoa.  They are less expensive, fewer American tourists, and more exciting then all inclusives.  There are lots of nice restaurants along the beach of Caberete that are easy to walk to from the hotels.  My family recently stayed at the Valero Beach hotel which is more expensive then some of the other hotels but it is very nice.  These places are about a 20 minute drive from the Puerto Plata airport.

  2. Punta Cana without a doubt.  Porta Plata has a rocky type of sand with dirty looking water.  Punta Cana has powdery white sand with beautiful water.  One part of Punta Cana has a wavy ocean, but on the lower part of the island it is very calm and you can walk out for quite a distance.

  3. i stayed in punta cana at the barcelo bavaro palace.  plenty to do, pretty good food, great pool and beach location... and you have the option to eat/drink and swim at the other barcelo hotels in the complex

  4. Puerto Plata is the best, why?

    1. Bigger beaches than in Punta Cana

    2. More to do outside the resorts than Punta Cana

    3. Town at 10 min from resorts (Punta Cana the town is 39 miles away)

    4. More excursions, Ocean World, Isabella de Torre,...

    5. The famous Rancho Salvaje with the Waterfall adventure.

  5. I stayed at th Riu Mambo which is an AI resort near Puerta Plata and it was fantastic. The staff are always happy which in my opinion reflects the nice working conditions. In my opinion if the satff are happy it 'rubs off' on the guests, and our experience was a fantastic one. I would recommend this hotel to my nearest and dearest at the drop of and hat and would say it was my fave holiday ever! Also you can use the facilities of the Riu bachatta and Merengue.

There are some fantastic excursions to go on too, such as-

The Freestyle Cat Trip- which is also all inc so no need to take any money unless you wanna tip. Includes snorkelling etc!

Monster Truck Safari-you will see 'the real dominican' !

I dare you to go and not have a fab time!

  6. We've stay in Puerto Plata at the Paradise Beach Club.  It was excellent so good  that we bought a timeshare there.  The food was good, as were the staff and entertainment.  It was very good value for money as it was all-inclusive,  13 hrs a day of food and drink, we paid for this when we got out there as it was an awful lot cheaper unless you're going as a package.  The only thing about the DR I didn't like was their money, it felt awful, damp and greasy and had a funny smell. (You have to take $$'s and then exchange the to DR $'s when you get there). Other than that I love the DR and go as often as possible.  Be careful at the airport though, if you let them handle your bags they'll all want to help & then they expect huge tips and usually ask for GBP.  Also find out, before you go exactly how much the taxi fare is from the airport to your hotel and get your visa sorted before you travel, saves alot of time at the airport. Oh and make sure you have the exact amount of money on you to get into the the country, I can't remember how much we paid last year but you have to pay the same amount to get out as well.

If you do decide to go I hope you have a great time.  ;)

  7. I've been to Puerto Plata & Punta Cana.

I agree, there's more to do on the northcoast.

However, if you're going for a relaxing beach holiday. I would recommend Punta Cana. I think the beaches are much nicer there than Puerto Plata.

Also there is afew tours to take in Punta Cana. One is Saona Island, and the other is the Monster Truck Safari. Both were great fun.

To be truthful, out of all the countries we've travelled too, the DR is our least favorite.

  8. At my house :--))

Depends on what type of trip you are expecting or want.

A relax atmosphere sun, beach, sand and water sports. Bavaro/PuntaCana,

Adventurous, beach, sun, horse, golf water park, walk around getting to know the people etc Puerto Plata.

River, golf, Mountain Rio San Juan.

Beach, River, mountain rural area, Cocodrile (ecoturism)  Barahona.

For Beach and sand JuanDolio/BocaChica (close to city about 35 mins.)

    So it up to You.

    Good Luck!!

    Enjoy Your Trip!!

  9. The north coast is better, and stay far, far away from all-inclusives whatever you do.  Just go to Sosua or Cabarete and check into a decent hotel.

  10. Couple of online sites with recommendations and reviews from other travelers.  You could also visit your local library and see if they have a travel guide available - Lonely Planet and Fodors both have nice, comprehensive guides.
