What's important is an assessment of future earning. High PE's get higher.

I attempt to avoid any stocks with a PE above about 25 and prefer stocks with a PE below 17.  High PE stocks are very dangerous things.  One slip up by the company and you can wind up loosing 90% of your investment in a matter of days.
