An HD camcorder is definitely better because of the image quality and most HD camcorder allow you to switch to SD video recording, allowing you to record longer.  I bought a sony HD camcorder and its great, so I would recommend HD. (When filming in HD make sure you have editing software that can handle the video.)

If your looking for some cheap HD camcorders, check out DXG camcorders.  There as low as $150. But you want the longest recording time so recommend getting something with a harddrive.
