Which, if any Japanese cell phones work in the US?

I want it for alltel or verizon.

(alltel was bought by verizon but until they're completely merged I have alltel)

you have to go to japan to get one first of all. In places like ikiabara they will be able to tell you which phones are compatible in your country. I will warn you, getting a japanese phone to work outside of japan is a really difficult procedure...
