  1. Out of the two you mentioned - I would go for the Samsung. The features of both are pretty good. The customer reviews from the samsung wins out. The lowest rating on the 12 who rated is a 4 out of 5. That is pretty good - since many people are very critical on their reviews of a product.

If you have a samsclub card then look at them. If you don't have sams in your area then check out Costco (I think that is what it is called?).

    47" Vizio LCD 1080p HDTV

    Model: VO47L

    # 1920 x 1080

    # 2000:1 Contrast Ratio

    # Frame Rate: 60 Hz

    $ 1,278 Cost

a little extra for in-store warranty

I think this is a better deal for a pretty good tv. When you get the repair / replacement plan for 2 years that covers you just in case.

Update one you might want to consider:

Magnavox 47" 1080p Full HD LCD HDTV w/ Digital Tuner, 47MF437B/37 - Energy Star Compliant

Price drop / or roll back at Walmart

    $1,198.00

  2. There about the same but if your looking for a good deal on a TV go here http://www.frys.com/

They are having a big sale and you can get TVs really cheap.

Like this SAMSUNG LN40A550 40" 1080P LCD HDTV for $1,299.00

  3. no #1 look better

  4. This model got some great reviews

Google that model, you will see it is a great TV. Plus you might find it cheaper online, like onecall.com

  5. Before even considering to purchase either the Sony or Samsung, check out the viewing angle, especially off of  180 degree axis since in most LCD's there is considerable brightness dropoff.  Even check out the Panasonic LCD TVs which have the least side-to-side drop off according to Consumer Reports.

    Good luck!

  6. The Sony.

Bigger picture and higher contrast ratio.

More HDMI inputs (4 vs. 3)

Although if cost is a factor I'd go with the Samsung. Nearly as good for $200 less.

  7. The Sony one would be the best choice.

However, shop around some more from different retailers.

But, your choices should be limited to a few Japanese makes: Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, and Sharp.  Pretty much forget the rest.

Magnavox is okay, but they are not the best bang for the buck.

AVOID VIZIO!  You WILL have headaches if the set develops any problems that require repair since there are no parts and no service data available for those things AT ALL, much less an established service network.

This means that the whole set will be replaced instead of repaired should a warranty claim be approved.  To top it off, there have been stories of customers having to ship defective sets back to Vizio for the warranty claim AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE.  You might buy an extended warranty at the store to mitigate this.  Then again, if you are going to spend the extra money on the extended warranty, you may as well just buy a Sony and not a Vizio.

Frankly, Vizio and other no-name cheapskate brands are not worth it since they do not have the service to back up their product.
