Most would say Australian Rules Football, Rugby and Cricket.

However there are quite a few polls that have shown that Golfing, Tennis and Swimming are also played by many Australians. Although they don't stand out as much they are also very popular and could be one of the top 3.

It really depends on who you ask as every survey seems to have a different result.

Depends how you define your question.

Being a statistician I know that surveys have shown that fishing is the most popular participation sport in Australia. Of the major sporting codes, soccer would be by far the largest, although I would suspect netball and softball would be up there.

AFL has the biggest crowds and TV audience in Australia, followed by cricket, rugby union and soccer.

Although some people have answered that rugby league is in the top three I would strongly doubt it, and junior sporting numbers. crowds and TV audience have been in decline for a number of years (despite the NRL faking the crowd numbers).

Most popular and most watched are two different things.

If you count fishing as a sport it's by a long way the most popular sport.  Netball, athletics and soccer have very high participation rates in juniors.  Hockey and Rugby Union are next.  Lawn Bowls and Golf are also very high in participation.

Then it's a question of most watched.  Cricket is the biggest armchair sport, particularly One Day International cricket.  AFL has the biggest average attendances at grounds by a long way over Rugby Union (Super 14), Test & ODI Cricket and then Rugby League but club Rugby Union struggles for crowds.

Soccer has gained popularity recently but still lags well behind the other 'big three' in attendances.
