Justin Madden played 320 games, starting at Essendon and then moving to Carlton where he played majority of his career, where he struggled to initially to establish himself in his own right rather than as "Simons brother".

Both men were ruckmen, and the winner of matches between Essendon and Carlton nowadays receive the Madden Cup. Simon was one of the youngest captains ever appointed, leading the Bombers before his 20th birthday. His career spanned 19 years (1974-1992), a phenomenal effort for a ruckman.
