Question:

Which Abortion Method is better: Pills or Surgical Aspiration?

I would like to find out (from those who have had an abortion before), which method is the safest or the better way? This is my first time being pregnant, I am 30, and this is only my 3rd week in pregnancy (luckily I detected it early). I am concerned about the complications and consequences associated with abortion, I heard taking the pills would be the natural way to go, but it takes longer, is messier and bleeds more. Surgical Vacuum Aspiration is quicker, but it's not as natural, and I would have to wait for a couple more weeks before they can do this procedure, as they can't even see the embryo yet. For those who have experienced either or both, can you please share your experience with me? Did it affect your ability to conceive in the future?

Thanks a lot!

  1. Neither-There is no good way , and nothing good about an abortion. This little baby deserves a chance!

  2. Why are you asking this in the pregnancy section where everyone is happy to be pregnant and realize that children are blessings from God. I don't know how women who go through with abortions can live with themselves. Please consider adoption.

  3. been there, done that, don't do it, it hurts physically when they dialate (spelling?) your cervix, and you do bleed A LOT.  You also have to wear pads, you can't use tampons until you are all healed up.  You have cramping for approximately 2 weeks. And mentally it stays with you too, I had the surgical procedure when I was younger and didn't have any support from friends and family... Just put your baby up for adoption.  You'll have serious regrets.  There are possibilities that if the doctor doesn't do the procedure right you will have scar tissue that will prevent you from being able to get pregnant in the future.  You are also at a high risk to get some nasty infections during the 3-6 week healing time.  If you don't mind me asking if you're 30 why don't you keep the baby?

  4. Taking the pills is safer (neither will prevent you from having children later), but you're best off to talk to your local Planned Parenthood for the most accurate health information on advantages/disadvantages of various abortion methods and any other options.

Edit: Loving the thumbs downs folks, wonderful, open-minding feminists we all are.

Also, Planned Parenthood does not provide aboritions. They provide information and referals. The wait time is based upon the demand and the number of doctors and clinics in the area which will perform them.

  6. I've had a surgical abortion, with no pain meds or anesthesia and it was a little traumatizing to hear the vacuum and it is painful when they dilate you. Also the doctor yelled at me for crying. but at the same time, it is over very quickly, within a few minutes.  I've had a miscarriage before and they say that the pills way of aborting is similar to a miscarriage.  I was at 6 weeks when I miscarried and did not experience any pain other than in my back.  I just bled a lot.  I am imagining that is what would happen if you took the pill.  I think that since you're only 3 weeks, you should do the pill unless you plan to get anesthesia to get the surgical option.

the complications of the surgical is that it could possibly scar the uterus and make you unable to have children, but that is very rare.  Also, you could risk an infection if the materials are not sanitized properly.  You are not allowed to wear tampons, only pads.  Right after the procedure, they will tell you to go to the bathroom and while you go, you may experience a large blood clot which is very normal. So don't get scared.  It doesn't hurt when it comes out of you.  For a couple of days afterwards, you will experience bleeding, which is why you wear the pad.

FYI:  If you're planning to do it at a planned parenthood, they usually do not offer anesthesia and the wait is forever..even with an appointment.

Also, contrary to what "playing" said, planned parenthood offers abortions in my state of Maryland...that's where I got it done.  It all depends on the state you live in.  However, not all of the clinics in my state offered them.  I could not go to my local planned parenthood, I had to drive out of the way to one in Baltimore City.

  7. Taking the pills to have an abortion is safer as it is done earlier in the pregnancy.  Abortion does not affect your ability to have children later.

  8. before you even think about abortion, go to this website  www.abortionno.org

at 8 weeks the baby can turn their head, suck their thumb and respond to pain.

  9. I don't understand why people ask about abortions here.  Most women are here celebrating their pregnancies or asking questions about it.  Next they'll be asking these questions in TTC.

You're worried about the complications of abortion?  You're worried about bleeding longer?

What about the life growing inside you.  At 30 years old I'd expect you to know better.  Shame on you!!

And to all of you who may give thumbs down, shame on you too!!  This is an innocent life this woman is killing.  It took me 2 1/2 years to fall pregnant.  Children deserve a life, whether you wanted them or not.  Adoption is much better than abortion!!!!!
