  1. New South Wales.

One day whilst cycling to work through a local Sydney suburb, I had one driver scream past then cut me off to dive into a parallel parking space.   As I was about to pass for the second time he cut me off again by pulling out into the lane after parking incorrectly in his spot.  All of this without indicators or warning.

Daily I get cut off by passing traffic who have no idea of the speed of modern road bicycles.  They especially think it funny to cut me off when they realise they have to change lanes to do a left turn.   Its quite funny to watch them the freak out when they realise they aren't going to make it since I am going the same speed they are.

Most of this is because Car drivers think they own the roads.  Thankfully NSW gives cyclists the right to take up the entire lane, as they are a vehicle too.  Often this is the only way to not get side swiped by ignorant drivers pushing their way through.

Interestingly the Northern Territory had the lowest average road toll for years when they had an open road policy in rural areas.  People knew they could go as fast as they wanted but didn't.

  2. There actually isn't a great deal of difference.  I have seen some pretty appalling stuff in Qld, NSW and the ACT but it's impossible to really tell any difference.  Someone wrote Canberra. Much of the Canberra population comes from out of town anyway and some have only been here 15 years or a lot less.  So they were bad NSW, Vic or Qld drivers first.

If you want to pick on a particular group, I'd say farmers are the worst.  Some seem to forget that they are not driving across their own land with no other traffic in sight.

Road fatality and accident rates are no guide.  Qld is about twice as big as NSW which means distances are greater.  Yet the accident and fatality rates compared to population are not that much higher.

  3. The Easter road toll for  Queensland was the worst with a record of seven deaths, Western Australia has hit five, Victoria is currently sitting at four, Tasmania is three and the Northern Territory and South Australia have each recorded one. Amazingly, there has been no deaths on New South Wales or ACT roads.

However the road toll for 2007 saw 1616 people loosing their lives on Australian roads, with New South Wales topping the list with 445 deaths, with Queensland being next, Victoria 3rd, Western Australia 4th, South Australia 5th, Northern Territory 6th and Tasmania last.

The ACT is the safest state, with NSW and Vic vying for second place, according to fatality rates per million.

I think it depends on speed, experience, alcohol, weather and the road conditions that cause these senseless accidents.

  4. HA! probably Victoria...or QLD. I live in Victoria n basically you hear about a car crash on the news every night.

  5. Qld especially the Gold coast. I drive here everyday almost and see some absolute stupid driving. many don't know how to use blinkers they tail gate their in a big hurry and weave in and out . Even the bus lanes that are now painted red people have a job to notice and still use them. Driving to Brisbane on the motor way some cross the 3 lanes in one move . I quite like seeing an idiot who speeds up from way back on a yellow light just to be stopped at the next red light so it's got him up the road no quicker than those who stopped in time on the yellow one. Also there are many tourists here that you can tell aren't sure where they are or where they need to turn and most cars don't give them any consideration at all. i have driven in all states and love the Nullabor where drivers wave and are willing to help others but out back driving is different. I have seen some trucks in a big hurry and realise why so many have accidents.
