Hi, I have been breastfeeding my baby exclusively for 5 months and I am going into hospital for a minor procedure in 2 days and I am not sure if I want to breastfeed due to the anaesthetic. Can anyone recommend a good formula that I can use to supplement expressed milk (I probably won’t be able to get enough expressed milk for 24 hours) or tell me some info on either S26 toddler, Karicare, the Nestle formula and whatever other ones there are out there. Thanks in advance.

  1. s26 and karicare are great however my experience is to wait until you are thinking clearly before stopping breastfeeding. The anaesthesia wont affect baby after 24 hours.

Start pumping like crazy now and you will have an oversupply plus have the formula as backup.

I had an oversupply of breastmilk and now I have nothing left after supplementing with formula. I just want to save you the pain I'm going through now (although 5 months is great)

  2. i prefer the carnation good start by nestle.  NO colic and its easier to digest.

  3. All the midwives and lactation consultants I have spoken to actually suggested to compare the ingredients on the back of the tins.  Why?  Because they all contain the same stuff just in slightly different proportions.  We use Heinz Nurture which is about $10-$12 a tin from Big W or Kmart, about $16-$17 at Woolworths.  Never had a problem.  If you are only going to use it for a day don't waste money on one of the more expensive brands.

  4. I breast feed also but i have a can of formula there in case now as i am slowing on my milk supply and dont seem able to pump enough and i freak that i wont have enough milk to feed him

My lactation consultant who has been working with me to help me and my son breast feed directly actually told me to buy formula to supplement

She told us to get s26 gold alpha but you would need s26 gold toddler

that is the hospitals choice and is recommended

  5. breast feeding is good , have you thought of a breast pump, why change what the baby is use too and why worry of other products you're not sure of, but the best choice if you must use a formula then consult with the baby's doctor would be the best option

  6. Nestle is really good. Also, Mead Johnson's products are good (this is if your child is allergic).

  7. You'll probably get a heap of overseas brands recommended on here, i'm guessing you're in Australia?

I'm in brisbane and i did heaps of research before putting my son onto formula, the best one that I found is Karicare Gold. It's a bit more expensive than the others (it's about $25 from the supermarket, or $20 from kmart or big w), but it's best for baby.
