Which is better for self-defense? Not like fighting, but like blocking and stopping yourself from getting hurt by attackers?

Wing Chun or Muay Thai

If you are concerned with defense then wing chun all the way- it teaches multiple different types of blocking and even trapping (which is where you lock up your opponents' arms to prevent them from attacking you altogether). Muay Thai mostly uses the basic boxing block, which actually forces you to take a hit, while wing chun practices redirection. Police, military, bodyguards, and club bouncers all swear by redirecting hits to keep themselves intact, merely covering your body parts with your arms only takes damage and doesn't avoid it.

  4. defense and fighting to me are not the same thing. they go hand in hand. and one can lead to the other.

    there is a difference between being attacked, and agreeing to a "fight"

    both arts are great. you make the art, the art doesnt make you. but muay thai will produce quicker results.

    one of the biggest differences is your goal. if you are FIGHTING...your goal is to defeat the opponent, submit him, win by points, knock him out..kill him...etc.

    if you are defending yourself you only have to survive.

    okinawan karate is a very good art as well once you get into it.

  5. well for a change bluto's got it pretty well right.out of the 2 options you have given i would say wing chun is better for self defence.

  6. boxing is what you're looking for. Kicking in self defense situations is a big mistake. Its an easy takedown for an attacker whose friends can them stomp you to death.

    Boxing is also the best system at striking defense. You will learn to move and deflect strikes easily.

    self defence IS fighting.

    if you are not prepared to accept that then nothing you do will prepare you for defending yourself from an attacker.  the term "self-defence" is just a propaganda term that schools used and have used to help make martial arts seem more socially acceptable in circles that disapprove of fighting.

    as for what style?

    ANY STYLE THAT TRAINS REALISTICALLY.

    on average the sportative styles have more schools that do so, so statistically if you walk into a random school of X sportative style (like muai thai) versus Y school of a non sportative style (like wing chun), then you have a greater chance of having better training.

    however, if you learn to count cards and how to bet properly (blackjack reference) you can turn the odds in your favor and have a better chance of finding a school that TRAINS REALISTICALLY from a particular style- provided of course you are in a geographic area that has that- like a large urban city.

    training realistically means training against a resisting opponent as if you were really trying to get the technique off on him and bieng in an environment and wiht a teacher that will show you how to properly apply your techniques- forms, kata, etc. will no more teach you application against a fully resisting opponent than learning to speak japanese will teach you how to solve complex calculous equations.

    EDIT: while I don't disagree with the answers of the above posters, boxing and juijitsu are generally good arts, they are simply reccomending one style rather than the methodology- training at gleason's gym is a h**l of a lot different than taking a boxing class at balleys total fitness.

    I don't think I could answer better. Take his advice. Method and methodology combined are more important than styles in this case.

    Krav maga is not the preferred system of the US military or law enforcement.

    Muay Thai doesn't use hands as much as Wing Chun- which is known for its fast strikes.

  11. I can't add to the best advice from Bluto. I can only reinforce that self defense is fighting. In a street situation where a life depends on your actions you must be prepared to fight like a daemon until the threat is removed.

    Which ever art you pursue You need to train realistically. I prefer Wing Chun over Muay Thai. Whatever you personally chose though you need to stay in shape and practice realistically.
