  1. Hatton

  2. Muhammad ali .. i bet a century from now people would still remember him . dont know about oscar de la hoya (i just heard his name)

  3. It has to be Oscar De La Hoya. I do think it will hurt boxing in some way. I know some people who still think he is the BEST boxer in the world. They didn't even know who was Mayweather when they fought, and they still bought the fight.

I agree with you Mathew, but De La Hoya has been the MOST marketable boxer of all time, there will definitely be another one who will be the most marketable at a certain time, but I doubt, someone will be bigger than Oscar.

  4. look they love pac man in his home land every one there does there and most boxing fans....

oscar got a big one to but manny is easy bigger just on the fan base not name as oscar is the biggest name in todays game... but ali is the biggest of all time..

he is a big name thats all as if he was like hatton charves

manny pac would of got over 100.00 to see the man more. he only sold 27 000 tickets some at $20.its just not big there in the states nomore yes oscar is the biggest name thats all.

ricky hatton can take 40 000 to vegus with only 3800 tickets

and sell 50 000 in 24 hours 1n 18 hours thats him fighting a nobody  if he had a big name he would sell 170 000 tickets easy as the hard thing is getting some place that size and you

still fans there will be fans with out tickets.

so oscar not in it  as  its fan not name....

how menny fan would fly to the uk not a lot so he out of it.

then manny and hatton  there fan will go around the world with them but there whole countrys follow them but asia is bigger than the uk so its manny.

but hatton has fans that go anywere

  5. I think Oscar De La Hoya has the biggest fan base but Hatton has the most dedicated being all that he had all those fans fly over from Europe to see his fight in Vegas followed by Paquiao.

As far as the sport and rating being affected by his retirement. I dont think it will make a diffrence because theres plenty of young fighter in the wings like Cotto,Pavlik,Berto.Peterson,Williams ext.

Also De La Hoya will still have his hands involved w/ his promotional company and he's going to do every thing he can to continue to make the biggest fights. And his first project in 2009 will be Ricky Hatton vs Manny Paquiao a Mega Fight that will be promoted by Golden Boy because Hatton is signed under golden boy

  6. DLH seems to have that (biggest fan base) wrapped up.

When he retires, I think it will actually be good for boxing.  He has too many things going on in his life and he is 8 or 9 years past his prime, and 6 years removed from a win over a decent fighter.

In the short term there may be a minimal downside to the boxing business, but as his stable of fighters grows, and his fans become fans of his fighters, I think boxing will be better for it.

  7. As far as having fans worldwide i would say maybe Oscar would be the biggest and Pacquiao would be catching him up as he is exciting to watch but as far as selling tickets for fights it is without doubt Ricky Hatton they cant even find an arena big enough to stage Rickys fights he sold out his last fight which was a 60000 seat arena in only a few hours and he wasnt even fighting a top echelon fighter, his fan base in the UK is absolutely massive and a lot of that is down to the fact that he is a really nice man outside the ring, amazingly i would say that Hattons fan base is much much bigger than Calzaghes in Britain even though Joe is challenging at the top of the pound for pound lists.

  8. I would say Oscar De La Hoya has the biggest fan base, but I don't think it will hurt boxings' ratings if he retires. If he retires, that does not mean  boxing fans won't tune in to watch boxing matches every Saturday on HBO and Showtime, sure we won't have the big million-selling ppv events anymore once a year, but I'm sure, in time, there will be another boxer with his star power, Pacquaio already seems to be following in his footsteps in a sense. The same way people STILL think Oscar is the best in the world, many people think Pacquiaou is the best boxer ever of all time, you see people say that everyday. There will be another De La Hoya, trust me.
