Question:

Which CANON DSLR & lenses for 600 dollars?

I've been using cameras for a long time but this is my first SLR. My budget is 600 dollars and I am adamant about getting a CANON DSLR. Obviously I'm after a camera body, but I also want a basic lens, a wide-angle lens, and a fairly decent zoom lense.

I'm not into action shots so I don't need anything catered specifically for sports photographers, or macro photography.

I have about 600 US dollars to spend on a camera body and lenses, what would you recommend and why?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. If I have not supplied enough information about my requirement to enable you to provide an accurate answer, please let me know and I will elaborate as much as I can.

  1. Does it have to be Canon? I bought the Samsung GX-10 last year (same as award winning Pentax K-10D!) with an 18-55mm and 50-200mm lens. It was a bargain as they were also offering a cashback deal but even without that this camera is a bargain.

By the way even though the GX was priced similar to Nikon and Canon alternatives the features meant it could always compete with the 'next one up' in the price range.

    Just a thought!

  2. regardless of brand, my feeling on this is to get not only the best body you can afford, but the latest generation.

The XT is very old, and the XTi is just an update on that. The XT is like two generations behind what's coming out now. Is it bad? Of course not, but digital bodies change fast.

You'll learn that when you step up to a dSLR, you will start to envy another body when you learn what's out there. I know you probably want to start shooting right away, but maybe you could spend that money on just the body, and get something better. The glass isn't going anywhere anyway.

If you are hooked on Canon, they just announced their new entry level cam, the XS, it's a step below the new-ish XSi.

The XS will launch in August, MSRP is 699, chances are it might come in a little lower if you look around. A newer body will have extra features like live view, a better LCD and cleaner pics at high ISO than an older body will not.

If you can wait a little longer, saving for the XSi might be better. Even though you are set on Canon, don't overlook Nikon's D60 or Sony's Alpha A200, I think the alpha is like 499 right now.

Again, XT, XTi fine cameras, but I'd go for latest generation and spend a tiny bit more.

drop down menu at the top for hands on info, btw canons get two names, one for the rest of the world and the USA. the XS is known as the D1000 everywhere else.

  3. For $600 you could get a used Rebel XT with a 18-55 kit lens, and a used 70-300 lens. Your budget limits you greatly. The XT is a great beginner camera, but that is going to take up most of your budget. With only $100 or $200 left, you are very limited on your telephoto lens choice. You may want to save up a bit longer so you can get a decent lens.

Have a look at some Canon lenses here.

The white "L" lenses are out of the question for you now. So you are very limited in quality lenses.

You are most likely going to have to break your budget to get everything you want. Start off small, man. You can't jump right in and get a wide angle, standard, and telephoto lens with a body for under $600. It just ain't going to happen. Save up longer, or just get the standard lens first.

  4. Really I don't think there is a Canon DSLR and all three lenses.

If you just want to get the Camera and basic kit lens, then save up for a Wide-Angle Lens and a decent zoom lens, then I would suggest either a EOS Digital Rebel XT or EOS Digital Rebel XTi. Where I got my XTi was a good price of $459. The XTi is a good 10.1 MP Entry Level Camera. Its quite compact and good for beginning photographers.

Check out the CNET review: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/...

The XT is also a good 8 MP camera but not as good as the XTi.

I bought my XTi from Photo Dynasty. But I bought my accessories like the Compact Flash Card and Canon Backpack from Amazon.

All of that equaled about 510 dollars.

When you buy the DSLR, you have to get a Compact Flash card (unless you already have one). I would suggest either a 2GB or 4GB CF Card. I found a Sandisk Ultra II 4GB for $35 on Amazon. Which is a really good price.

You also want to get a camera bag/backpack.

You dont want to have your camera out in the open where dust, water, etc. can get on it. I suggest the Canon 200EG Backpack. Its about $35 on Amazon.
