  1. Heh, somebody suggested a simple Kodak P&S over full featured SLR. Made me laugh a bit... Oh, and the two cameras in question are digital too, by the way!

Also interesting observation about reflector lens - never heard of one on budget side, and generally lenses that use mirrors produce poorer quality then their straight through counterparts.

Ok... now to the question. Between the two, I'd say D40.

    Here's why:

Sony is really not a camera company. They want to be, but they are not quite there. If you buy into Sony system, chances are you'll have the set of lenses and will want to upgrade to better cameras later. Well... Sony has little to offer in terms of upgrade. So you have limited choice of bodies, limited choice of lenses to grow up to. Also the dreaded memory sticks that are not compatible with anything but Sony...

D40 is on the counter part an SLR from very reputable camera manufacturer that's been on a market for years and has years of experience, plus a huge set of lenses available and constantly added that are compatible with D40 and will most likely be compatible with its successors. There are lots of ways to grow out of D40 both body wise and lenses wise... So between the two you mention - D40 is a clear winner....

Do you mind if I confuse you a little more?

There's also Canon Digital Rebel XT (or even XTI, or XSI if you have a few more dollars to spend) that are also great cameras that share the described above advantages of D40 over A200....

Personally, being a Nikon user I would have bought D40 (as you're asking what I would buy), but I think it would be unfair not to mention the Canon competitor....

You may want to take a look, but don't ask around what camera to buy between these two. Because all Nikon users will tell you to go for Nikon, and all Canon users will insist that you buy a Canon! Instead, go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ and read the reviews of the cameras, look at pros and cons and see if you like one of them better.

Then go to a camera store and try handling both, and maybe you'll notice that one is better sitting in your hands than the other, or has more intuitive menus, button locations, or general operation... Then you'll know which one is the best for you.

  2. Definitely the Nikon. They have this amazing lens feature called the nikor reflector lens that makes even smaller megapixles look more amazing then the larger megapixle competitor cameras!!!!!

  5. I'd get the Nikon D40. It's probably all the camera that I'll ever need to take quality photos, and it's available at a great price compared to the Sony A200!
