Question:

Which Camera (dslr)?

I'm looking to buy a dslr, but am unsure which is best. I'm happy to pay up to about €1000 to start. I'm wondering if the more expensive cameras are better or would i be better buying another lens or filter or something instead? Also I'm leaning towards a cannon or nikon, but open to suggestions as I'm new to all this.

Thanks

  1. The other replies have been good and I am absolutely in love with my D300. But I will throw out another option. You may want to look at a gently used D200 or D2. both of these cameras are rated for the mechanism in the hundreds of thousands; and with with the D300, D700 and D3 out you can find gently used models of these. That would give you more money to put into lenses, flash , tripod etc

I would hold off on a D80 only because the D90 is rumored to be out soon and if you really want a D80 you will probably be able to get it cheaper after that. The D80 is a wonderful camera.

If you are just stepping up from a point and shoot you may also consider an entry level DSLR like the D40 or D60. They will both give you fine pictures in a fun easier to use camera to learn on. ( The D300 has a manual thas around 500 pages, you can certainly use the cameras basic functions  without knowing what is in all of the pages but you cannot use all the functions without taking the time to read and study the manual  )

  2. If you don't have any system lenses, you really can go either way. But there are differences. Canon has been the leader in most features over the years, but Nikon's latest DSLRs definitely have some advantages, especially low-light performance and focusing speed. The Nikon D300 would be a great choice, but lenses are a more important place to invest. You'd be better off with a D80 and a nice lens if you have none to start with. The Canon 40D is also a great choice.

  3. Flip a coin. It doesn't matter one iota which one you pick between Canon or Nikon. Take a look at a picture and see what camera it came from. You can't tell.. which is exactly my point.
