  1. Go to Flickr.com.

    Click on explore.

    Click on camera finder.

Select a brand then a model.

Scroll down the page (still with me?)

And you can see what kind of pictures people are taking with that particular camera.

My favourite (my camera!) is an Olympus E-410. Available as a brilliant twin lens kit but it is at the upper end of your price range - about $600 on ebay.

It's smaller than most dslr's and very light, too.

I nearly forgot - these are mine:

  2. I don't understand why you're spending $800- unless you're buying a digital SLR camera. And some of those are cheaper than $800- with lens.

As dedeensa said the Canon PowerShot A720 IS is a great camera. It's $200- plus shipping at Abe's of Maine and at Adorama. 6X optical zoom, 8 megapixels, and has manual controls in addition to auto. Also has an image stabilizer for shaky hands.

  3. Checkout the Sony Cybershot T300 10.1MP Digital Camera. Its pretty awesome.

  4. i have a digital camera called vista quest. and its only about 100 bucks. but this camera is really good quality. it has 5.0 megapixels. go to this website. hope this helps!

  5. they're all great.. canon, fuji, nikon.. especially if you wana go that expensive.. they'll do their job great.. just pick one that you like, i mean looks wise, and go from there!

  6. I have a Canon PowerShot A520. I like it so much I recommended it to my mom (she now has one) and girlfriend's mom as a Christmas present for my girlfriend. My girlfriend got the updated model (I think it's the A720). Both are great cameras. (Now I'm jealous!)

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for in a camera, but...

Mine is a 4 Megapixel - WAY more than I need most of the time. It has a setting where you can take lower resolution pics, which saves space on the flash card. (Good for long trips with a 512Mb card.) Plus, even at a reduced setting (~1.5-2Mp), pics look great on my computer monitor. (I think the A720 is a 6Mp). If you want hi-res., you can very easily turn it up before the shot.)

I take it backpacking often - (it's a tough camera). It has lots of settings for taking extreme close-ups, panoramas, movies, and an idiot (auto) mode which makes taking quick pictues easy.

Along with idiot mode, it also has manual modes - where EVERYTHING can be set to your liking (exposure time, flash brightness, focus... lots of stuff I don't understand!).

It runs on 2 AA batteries - they easily last for a week-long backpacking trip.

I think I bought mine for ~200 bucks, and the newer (improved) model is about the same - if not cheaper!

If $800 is your upper limit, maybe your skillz are beyond this camera's potential, but I was amazed with this camera's: quality, functionality, durability, "fine-tuneability" and ease of use.

    It's definitely worth a look!
