Something small and forgiving with good all-around visibility and not too much power.

The smaller Japanese or Korean cars will do the trick, perhaps also a MiniCooper or VW Rabbit or Beetle.

Try to get antilock brakes and a multitude of airbags.

I would definitely recommend AGAINST any sort of SUV.  They are not safe, especially for young people and especially for new drivers.  This is because of the instability inherent in their high center of gravity and their combination of large size with poor visiblity of where the edges of the vehicle are.  In addition, they are likely to overturn when overcorrected, which is something that is worsened by the quicker reflexes of a young person.

SUVs give a false sense of security.  If you are in one, you are more likely to be involved in a wreck; if in a wreck, you are more likely to be injured; and if injured, more likely to be fatally injured.
