Which College to Choose??

I want to attend an HBC (Historical Black College). Now, I like the vibe of being around my kind of people that want to be educated just like me but the school I want to go to is Party Party Party... almost every night. I'm not even a party person nor do I care to associate with those who do party in inappropriate ways. The other college I'm looking at is not an HBC but it is a good school and is also not too far from home.. what do I do?!?!

  1. You could try to find an HBCU that isn't as party oriented, and which perhaps has more of a focus on academics than on partying. The top HBCU, academically, are Spelman, Howard, Morehouse and Hampton. If you have the academics, maybe one of those would suit you better? Naturally, there is a social scene at each of these schools, but because the students there are serious about their academics, might one of them fit you better?

I'd hate for you to have to give up your dream of attending an HBCU. I'm hoping you might find one that fits you better than the one you're considering.

Spelman is one I'd target for you. That school is well known *not* to be a party school, and it's an elite HBCU. If you could get in there, it could do great things for your future. Xavier of Louisiana is another HBCU that is well known for *not* being a party school. Also considered fairly "non-party" schools are Howard and Hampton, HBCU and respected, academically.

ETA: It has to be in Texas? You won't go nearby, to Louisiana or something? Okay.

If you *must* go to school in Texas, then all I can suggest is that you open your search and look at *every* HBCU in Texas, and see if you can find one that fits what you want. US News publishes a complete list of HBCU, here, which you can use to look for the HBCU in Texas:
