I am interested in buying a DSLR and my budget and choice permits the following two options-

Nikon D80 with 18-200 mm VR

or

Nikon D300 / D200 with 18-55 mm lens

Which out of these is a better option ? How important is the Expeed processing and Sensor cleaning in D300 ?

  1. Which is better? The D300 of course. It's an amazing camera that will not let you down. I would, however, suggest skipping the 18-55mm kit lens and swap it for a 50mm f1.8 Nikkor.

  2. I think you should go with the d300 if you can but put a better lens on it like the 18-135  lens at least the 18-55 lens will only let you do close pictures not far away  the d200 is not as good as the 300 so I would not even include them in your choice.  If you go to dpreview.com you can compare the cameras features side by side and enter the forum and talk to people about the cameras and what you want to use them for.  The D80 is 3 fps and up to 1600 iso the D300 is 6 fps and 3200 iso just for starters.  If you shop around like I believe it is beach camera you can get the d300 a few hundred cheaper then the stores are advertising.  They also do pkg with lens and stuff.  Good luck

  3. Check out Sony ALFA-200 too, that can also be accommodated within your budget!

  4. I'd suggest waiting a month.  Nikon is set to announce the D90, which has liveview, sensor cleaning, and Expeed processing.  Look for it at Photokina.

  5. I think you should go with the one you like the most. Do you know what you want? Look at the specs and see which ones have what you want.

  6. The D300 is a professional quality camera with many improvements over the older D80. The D-80 while still a great camera really doesn't compare and its soon to be replaced by the D90 if rumors are true.

You will get better metering, more control over focusing, faster frames pers second and more control with the D300
