  1. I would say the D300 it has 51 point matrix focusing where the 4o D has only 9 cross-type AF points. It has the new expeed image processor, it has active D lighting.  Its color is excellent and the only Canon I would choose over it would for color and sharpness would be the 5 D but look at what you pay for that

  2. d300 has the best images

40d has the best lens options

a350 has some fancy features and the best color(in my view) Good price for what you get too.

I would wait for the nikon d90 hitting the stores in a few weeks. If has the d300 sensor for about 600 bucks less.

  3. The D300, Simply Because:

The Canon EOS 40d is older technology, only has ten megapixels ( which isn't all that important, but the image quality on the d300 is better by nature ) However, this isn't a bad camera, it's still better than the a350, despite it's 14 megapixels. The 40d is more expensive, and with cameras, you get what you pay for. So we can establish that the 40d is better than the a350, but not better than the d300:

However, you can save money by getting the 40d, and you can get a really nice six hundred dollar lens. The d300 is $1,600 body only, so add a nice lens, and that's 2,000$ so, you might as well get the 40d with a really nice lens if you don't want to spend $2,000
