  1. Definitely the Mongols under Ghengis Khan.  At one point they owned almost all of Asia and parts of Europe.

  2. The British Empire ruled a quarter of the world's population for over 300 years.

That required a mean army and navy.

  3. It's very difficult to say. If you compare armies from different periods of time you most likely will face the problem of comparing the historical background of said era, weapons, technology, etc. If n**i Germany would fight the full might of the Roman army, they would literally obliterate the Romans. The most powerful army in history is the most powerful army of OUR times: The American Army.

Other powerful military nations: n**i Germany, Napoleonic France, The Ottoman Empire, various medieval nations: The Hapsburgic  Empire, France & England during the 100 Years' War etc, The Roman Empire, The Macedonian Empire, etc.

But, again, it would be unfair to compare the military strength of nations in different periods of time. History is written by the winners, and right now, with the fall of communism, the last great threat, the U.S. of A. is shaping itself as the winner. However, Arab nations that support terrorism might just be the next big threat to American supremacy.

  4. The Mongolians under Genghis then Kublai, they controlled such a huge kingdom and crushed everyone under foot...followed by the Romans which was the most well drilled and disciplined fighting force the world has seen....ah, the Greeks/Macedonians under Alexander...and so on

  5. 1.Roman Empire

    2.Macedonians under Alexander

    3. n**i Germany

    4 USA (1940-2008)

    5.China will come

  6. I totally agree with sweet volitaire. The Mongols under Genghis Khan developed a great military power & conquered a larger area than any other empire. Unless you're counting the British empire, which is officially a kingdom not an empire.

  7. Nobody has mentioned the British Empire. When you say millitary, you think first of army's, but you have to look at the Royal Navy and how it dominated the globe from 1588 to 1914.

To have a large singular land mass for an empire has been common throughout history. But to control 25% of the world's territory scattered over every reigon of the world is an extraordinary feat.

  8. 1- The Persian Achamenid Empire

    2- The Macedonean Empire

    3- Sassanid Empire

    4- Maurya Empire

    5- Chinese Empire

    6- Roman Empire
