Which English city? Is London really so much more expensive than other cities?

Hi everyone!

Please I 'd like an advice about London and Uk!

I’m Italian,28 years old and decided to work as a dentist in England, but I can't decide the city!

I'd like london for its free time, beauty, international atmospheare, more flights to Italy, and there's a colleague I know a little bit.And actually I had thought at least to try in London.

But the life cost (room, food, time and money spent out, etc.), even if I'm not going to go out or to be drunk every 2 or 3 nights!)is high, even if this could be partially compensated by the higher salary, I guess.

Is London really so much more expensive than other cities? even living in zone 2 or 3, and without going out every night?

Which one could be another big/medium city in Uk/England, nice to live, with a good "quality of life"(public transportation, free time, green areas, sport facilites, etc.) with a little bit of amusement?

For example:Birmingham,Manchester,bristol,br... I could have an opportunity inBirmingham

Thanks

  1. If you want to be where its at live in London  there is an old saying the 4 corners of the world meet in London .

  2. its a very expensive place as in central london a flat with1 bedroom is like 750k

try brighton its expensive but big and i hear not much dentists down there

  3. Come to Leeds, West Yorkshire.  A great city, with a terrible shortage of dentists.  Cost of living significantly lower than London; great countryside, night life, culture, restaurants and bars.  People very friendly

My partner's children live in London and the cost of living is sky high; one of the most expensive cities in the world.

  4. birmingham is good,

city centre is a good place to shop- bullring, mailbox....buses, trains, cabs, metro(to get to wolverhampton), airplanes.....chinese quarters....electric cinema....lots of places to eat & drink & go out to....lots of places to see and things to do....its pretty at night and at christmas!!! lol.....star city.....

    BUT

its busy 24/7...dangerous, fair bit of crime

its just as expensive as any where in the UK...i would say london is more expensive, i have never been there but tourists tend to normally go to london, so it makes sense it would be more expensive there, like blackpool, (which is another attraction) is sooo expensive it costs like 85p for a can of cake and round here(wolverhampton- near birmingham) its only bout 50-60p.

oh and other places by it are

dudley- dudley castle, dudley zoo, bowling, showcase cinema, black country museum, priory ruins

wolverhampton- shopping, molyneux, places to see(churches, museums),

brierley hill- big shopping centre, cinema, canal, waterfront

    walsall-  lots of shopping centres

    and so on..

and birmingham is nearer blackpool & drayton manor!!!  lol

  5. nowhere else in England will compare to London, there's just something about it. i live just outside of london in surrey, it's expensive here too but not quite as much as central london. in all honesty i wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the UK except for london. i appreciate the other areas like brighton but after a while i just crave to be back where i live. it's hard to explain but somehow all the bad points of living there are justified by the good points.

you could try living in a s*****r area and then working your way up to the nicer parts when you earn more money. or living outside of london like i do, where i live you can be at waterloo in about 15/20 minutes on a fast train, or 30 on a slow train.

    York,

    Chester,

  7. Yes, London is more expensive, but you get paid a bit more to make up for it.

  8. Although it is true that London is an expensive city, most people who work here get what is called London Weighting Allowance.  This is an addition payment to salary, something in the region of £2,000 plus a year or more, to help compensate for the higher cost of living.

The link below will take you to a list of further links regarding the London Weighting allowance.

The real advantage which London has on many other UK cities, is that the Mayor's office lay on lots of freebie events throughout the year.  There's really lots to do here in London which is absolutely free and also unique.

So, don't be put off by London and talk of the cost of living here.  It really is a great city and one built 2,000 by the Romans.  There is a well established and large Italian community here.

One other small point - London actually gets less rain per year than does the city of Roma.
