Hey everyone, I'm a German American from MN and I'm planning to get a tatto of the outline of the State of MN on my upper back shoulderline followed by the American Flag and German Flag crossing undernieth it. My question is which German flag should I use between these two?

I'm looking for some opinion on which one. The first represents the N. German Federation, which I know makes more sense considering my families history (We're pure Aryan of the desending Nordics= which settled in the Northern part) and thats when my ancesters came to America, (Waaaay hella back ago during the 1800's). And the second represents Germany after the fall of the Confederation, the Empire, and the Third Reich (The one everyone recognizes)

Which should I get?

Note: I'm Ginger so I have very pale skin. The White on the first flag will still show up, lol

  1. If you don't mind explaining to everyone what the first one is, I'd say go with the one that MOST reflects your cultural heritage, however, I do believe everyone automatically recognizes the latter flag as a representitive of Germany.

I didn't help one d**n bit, now did I?! (lol)

    Sorry!

  2. The first one shows your heritage more, I would go with that.

If your a stubborn German like most of them in my family you won't mind telling anyone who asks what the flag on your back shows, in fact you'll want to let everyone know!

  3. Go with the second because you really won't get your desire color with the first, black, yellow and red is better.

  4. I say second one.

    It shows 'Germany' more.

  5. were ever you were born or you parent were born

  6. There is only one German flag being used today, the tricolor flag shown at http://www.ultimateflags.com/int/germany...

This flag was used by both East and West Germany during the Cold War. The East German version included a Communist symbol in the center as the only differing point.

When the two German areas re-united in 1990 the West German version of the flag was adopted to represent the unified Germany.

Originally the colors black, red and yellow were taken from the uniform colors of the "Black Jager" - volunteers who fought against Napoleon from 1813-1815. Later however, the colors were given new meanings by a German politician and poet, Ferdinand Freiligrath, when he indicated that the black was for gunpowder, the red for blood and the yellow the glow given off by the fire.

(The flag used by East Germany in the Cold War can be seen at  http://www.ultimateflags.com/int/eastger...  but, as you can see, the major colors are exactly alike.)

PS--after looking at the ones you mentioned, I'd still go with the one today. The white may show up, but the yellow would even better.  If you  want to honor your ancestors, inside the Minnesota outline, put a small rectangle with the black, white, and red flag, and the other 2 below it. That way, everybody would be happy.  =D

  7. An american flag with the word TATTOO on it!
