Question:

Which HP or other printer is economical for printing color graphics?

I am now using cartridges 92 93 and it is very expensive to print anything in color. I heard Kodac has a new printer that is economical in ink cost per page. I am use to using HP though. Any models that are really good for printing allot of pages in color. I still would like to use original inks. I heard that the larger ink cartridges are more economical. Thanks

  1. If you do not want to get into the expense of a laser printer, I recommend the Epson printers. Epson just came out with a new printer that is a small home/office printer. There are actually two that I would recommend to you, for different reasons.

The first is the Workforce 40. This printer uses 4 individual ink cartridges, llike the before mentioned HP, but you have two different ink cartridges sizes available for color and 3 for black. The most important thing about this printer, for your use, is that the ink is pigment, not dye. Pigment ink is waterproof on plain paper, so whatever you print will be waterproof and last up to 6 times longer than dye ink. When dye ink gets wet, it runs and turns into something unrecognizable. It is WiFi and Ethernet, for wireless printing and networking. Retails for $129.99

Second is the Workforce 600 is eveything that the Workforce 40 is but adds copy/scan/fax. Retails for $199.99. If you do not need the WiFi and Ethernet, but want the copy/scan/fax features you can get the Workforce 500, retail value $129.99, but this only has the moderate and high yield ink cartridges availavle.

These printers are also great for graphics and photos, because they use a MicroPiezo printhead. What this means to you is that you are getting a precisely measured ink droplet without the overspray caused by the thermal printheads. You also are getting three precise ink droplet sizes, 3,4 and 5 picoliters. Considering the human red blood cell is 3 picoliters, that is small. I strongly recommend these printers for what type of you are doing.

If there is one key thing I can get you to change your mind about. It is the Kodak printer. Yes, they do have less expensive ink costs and that is because they are pytting 5 colors in one ink cartridge, so you are really only getting2-3ml of ink for each color and when you run out of a color you are tossing the other colors as well. You will be constantly replacing the ink cartridges and you WILL NOT have the same print quality as you get with a Epson or HP.

  2. Forget Ink jet for econimical printing. IF you are looking to lots of colour printing (I dont mean photos) then go for a laser.

Ok toners are a lot more to buy in a single hit, but printing wisw, a lot cheaper to run, and graphics a lot smoother.

so at UK prices. £10 for HP 93 (130 pages) 8p per a4 sheet

    Samsung laser £110 x 4 toners (2000 pages) 5.5p per a4 sheet

All depending on ink coverage, plus the toner will not dry like the ink will

  3. That depends upon how much you want to spend on a printer.   One of the most economical ink jets is an HP business inkjet1200..   The cartridges are massive there are 4 of them at about $30 each and 4 print heads at about $40 each, however each cartridge is good for about 1000 pages and each print head for about 12000.   The printer also costs about $500.

If you do not want to spend that much, go with the KODAK.   In most cases HP makes a terrible product right  now.   Even the largest ink tanks are small compared to the tanks they were realeasing a few years ago.

  4. Lasers have sharper text and are generally faster than inkjets. While toner cartridges are more expensive than ink, they print more pages, so the cost per page is lower. But you pay more up front. Inkjets are better for photos and cheaper for low volume. Personally, I use both. I have an inkjet for photos, a color laser for high volume color jobs and a black laser for regular text. I use the black laser most often.

You can get a good color laser today for under $170 (Samsung CLP-315). Toner cartridges are more expensive then inkjet cartridges but they last for about 2,000 pages. It does a nice job on photos, but an inkjet is still better for this.

Inkjet: As someone who was in the computer hardware business for years (though I rarely sold printers since I couldn't compete with the crazy rebates) I have always recommended Epson. The print quality is excellent, even on plain paper. I have photos I printed on a 640 about ten years ago hanging in my office which still look good, though not as good as the ones from the CX8400 on glossy paper. The warranty is excellent. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. I had one customer who needed this. He called one afternoon and had the replacement two days later. Another client bought a Canon. It needed two repairs within a few months. Each time it was taken to the repair center, then picked up a few days later. This client runs a specialty printing business and this really hurt. They have since bought an Epson CX5000 and have had no down time since.

All name brand ink is expensive, but you can get cheap new replacement cartridges for Epson (not refills which I never recommend) for under $5 at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp   I have been using these for years.

The CX8400 scanner/copier/printer was on sale at circuitcity.com for $60 with free shipping. It uses 3 colors plus black.

The NX400 which uses the same cartridges is on sale at Staples for $75.

The RX595 scanner/copier/printer also prints on DVDs. It uses 5 colors plus black and has even higher photo quality. It's on sale for $80 after $55 instant rebate.
