Hi, I looking to buy a Harley this month and I'm a huge chopper fan. I would like to buy a Harley that I could eventually customize. I could buy the Harley Rocker cuz it already looks like a chopper but I would like to do it myself.

Which model or models would you recommend.

I like the Cross Bones but could I make it a chopper in a few years?

Here`s a link to the kind of final product I would like just to give you an idea.

  1. Any bike can be chopped even a sport bike.

The term Chopper came from back in the day when someone would take a basket case bike. Rebuild it by Chopping up other bikes for parts and Bobbing the fenders a lot of the old school chops only had a rattle can paint job.

Chopping a bike is mainly changing parts out (now days) If you have the know how and the tools you can do it. now if you want to go big time you can get in to some frame and body work. So I would say it is not that hard. This is something the old school guys did in the garage at there house in the old days.

  2. Aint no real style if thats what you want Thats why its called a custom

Set a frame on blocks and go for it

  3. If I were looking to chop a Harley i wouldn't go with anything new. The frames are butt-ugly. I would look for a ratty shovelhead. You can pick one up that needs work for 3 to 4 grand. The frames on these bikes are nice and sleek and with a weld on hardtail and a little rake in the neck you'll have a classic looking scooter. Rebuild the motor right and use good modern ignition and electrics like Mallory and Cycle Electric and you'll have a bulletproof scoot that turns heads and at half the cost of a new stocker. Plus, you won't be giving any of your hard earned money to those a**holes at Harley Davidson.

  4. find the oldest shovelhead and go from there

    make it a bobber

  5. If you want to build a kick azz chopper get a Victory Jackpot and put the Pro Street front end on it. You will have an awesome bike with a 280 rear tire, 100 CI, 6 speed. Photos on the website below. Once there go to the K.E.G. Store and search Pro Street. This will give you a 45 degree rake and maintain proper trail geometry.

  6. If you know you're going to chop it why not start with a Big Dog or a Texas Iron Horse or some other type of manufactured chopper ?

  7. all of occ's choppers are roughly based on harley soft tails. any soft tail would be a perfect start point and are easily choppered with a bit of hard work and time. soft tail cusgtoms as they have a narrow front wheel.

  8. Any of them.  They are made to customize.  Find the one you like the feel of most and go with that one.  H-D and the aftermarket have plenty of choices for customization.

  9. if you gotta have the hardtail look like in your link the softail fxstc or fxstb at $16 to$18 "msrp", with some bolt on stuff (tank, fender, kicked out tripletree, etc.) would match it pretty close.

if your really going to build a chopper  the fxd dyna superglide at $12k to 12.5 k "msrp" would make more sense.

the softail's have the 96b engine with the rotating counter balance shaft.(just more parts to wear out)

the superglide has the basic 96" engine with rubber mounts, the same after market performance parts will fit either engine.
